Bill Maher has said that more LGBTQ+ people are coming out because it’s “trendy” and that “we will all be gay in 2054”, while insisting that the US is “literally experimenting on children”.

In the ‘New Rules’ segment at the end of his show Real Time with Bill Maher on Friday (20 May), the political commentator and comedian referenced a recent Gallup poll which showed that more Americans than ever before (7 per cent) identify as LGBTQ+, with 21 per cent of Gen Z saying that they were queer.

Maher said: “Broken down over time the LGBT population of America seems to be roughly doubling every generation… If we follow this trajectory we will all be gay in 2054.”

His comment garnered laughter from the audience, but he continued: “I’m just saying that when things change this much this fast people are allowed to ask: ‘What’s up with that?’

“All the babies are in the wrong bodies? Was there a mix-up at the plant?”

Later the TV host, who describes himself as “liberal”, added: “It’s okay to ask questions about something that’s very new and involves children. The answer can’t always be that anyone from a marginalised community is automatically right, trump card, mic drop, end of discussion.”

Maher referred to gender-affirming healthcare for trans youth like puberty blockers as “literally experimenting on children”, gave a shout out to a book which compares being transgender to a mental illness, and criticised the fact that there were no cisgender gay men as grand marshals for New York City Pride.

“That’s where we are now,” he said.

“Gay men aren’t hip enough for the gay Pride parade. Compared to trans, gay is practically cis, and cis is practically Mormon.

“This is a phenomenon we need to take into account when we look at this issue. Yes, part of the rise in LGBT numbers is from people feeling free enough to tell it to a pollster, and that’s all good, but some of it is [because] it’s trendy… Remember the prime directive of every teen is anything to shock and challenge the squares who brought you up.”

Towards the end of the horrifying monologue, he added: “Never forget children are impressionable and very, very stupid… Maybe the boy who thinks he’s a girl is just gay, or whatever Frasier was.

“Maybe the girl who hates girly stuff just needs to learn that being female doesn’t mean you have to act like a Kardashian.

“Maybe childhood makes you sad sometimes and there are other solutions besides, ‘Hand me the d**k saw.’”
